Home EV charger: a practical installation checklist
A home charge point can make everyday EV charging more convenient, but its benefit depends on your building, connection and driving habits. Treat an installer’s site survey as the starting point, not a promise that every home supports the same charging power.
Check your electrical installation
Ask a qualified local electrician to assess the supply, distribution board, earthing arrangement and available capacity. Three-phase availability varies between homes and markets. The car's AC onboard charger and the installation's limit jointly determine charging speed; a larger wallbox alone cannot make the car charge faster.
Choose protection and smart functions
Have the installer specify suitable circuit protection, residual-current protection and any DC fault-detection requirements applicable under local rules. Dynamic load balancing can reduce charging power while other household loads are high. Confirm whether tariff scheduling, open integrations and offline operation actually work without a subscription.
Estimate the full cost
Compare the installation quote, cable routing, possible network upgrades, maintenance and charging energy—not only the wallbox price. Record your real electricity tariff, any fixed session fees and charging losses. A solar integration can be useful if supported, but avoid assuming every daytime kilowatt-hour is free.
Commission and document
Request installation test records and operating instructions. Verify safe cable storage, weather suitability, a reachable emergency isolation point and the difference between scheduled charging and an electrical fault. Keep contact details for the installer and review the setup if you later change cars.
Example, not a quote
At 11 kW, adding 44 kWh would take at least 4 hours before charging losses and charging-power tapering. If the vehicle accepts only 7.4 kW AC, the same energy takes longer regardless of the wallbox rating.
Electrical safety and permitted installations depend on your country's rules; use a qualified installer.
